Where Stone Veneer Works Well

Stone veneer can enhance the beauty and appeal of a home or commercial building without covering every wall. Many projects use it as an accent instead of the main exterior material. It can blend with stucco, plaster, EIFS, siding, brick, and other exterior finishes.

Stone veneer profiles range from bold and rustic to clean and modern. Some customers want the authentic look of real stone. Others want manufactured stone because it is lighter, more flexible, and often more practical for the project.

What Stone Veneer Is

Stone veneer is a thin layer of stone or stone-like material installed over a prepared surface. Natural stone veneer is cut from real quarried stone. Manufactured stone veneer is made from cement, aggregates, color pigments, and molds that create natural-looking texture. Cultured stone is a common term for manufactured stone veneer and has been used in the industry for decades.

Thin veneer usually does not require a structural foundation ledge. That makes it suitable for more building project types than full-depth stone. It can still be heavy, though. A typical 10 square foot box of stone veneer may weigh around 80 to 90 pounds depending on the material.

Installation And Moisture Details

Stone veneer installation is not just sticking panels to a wall. The surface has to be prepared correctly. The material has to be cut and laid out cleanly. Proper installation helps prevent moisture issues like mold, staining, and damage behind the wall.

Many veneer installations use Type S mortar, depending on the system and substrate. SCC Exterior Plastering does not provide painting services. Paint may be part of a larger design plan, but stone veneer should be selected, installed, and finished as its own material.

Frequently Asked Questions

Stone Veneer FAQs

Common questions about cultured stone, manufactured stone veneer, and exterior stone finishes.
What is cultured stone veneer?
Cultured stone veneer is manufactured stone made from cement, aggregates, and color pigments. It is designed to look like natural stone while being lighter and easier to install.
Manufactured stone veneer is often more affordable than full natural stone. Cost depends on the material, wall prep, access, layout, and project size.
Cultured stone is not a waterproofing system by itself. Proper wall preparation, flashing, drainage, and installation details are needed to manage moisture.
Some products are marketed for DIY use, but exterior stone veneer is usually better handled by a professional because wall prep and moisture details matter.
